Actress Meg Ryan is an ambassador for CARE, a founding member of the ONE Campaign dedicated to empowering women in the fight against global poverty.
Every minute of every day, one woman dies from pregnancy-related complications. Every minute. And almost all of these deaths take place in poor countries.
As a mother of two children, I am personally moved to help mothers worldwide. I believe, and I’m sure you do too, that it is unacceptable for mothers to die needlessly from problems during pregnancy and childbirth – problems that could be avoided with better health care.
There isn’t a simple solution. But there is hope. CARE’s maternal health programs in some 20 countries have shown that a comprehensive approach can turn the tables for mothers at risk – and you and I can help. This Mother’s Day, urge your legislators to support CARE’s Safe Motherhood Platform.
CARE’s Safe Motherhood Platform is a set of recommendations to increase U.S. funding for family planning and maternal health programs, and to use that funding more effectively. These changes could save the lives of hundreds of thousands of mothers and children worldwide.
